My glass mosaics explore the themes of identity, personal reflection, sense of place, resilience and spirituality. Characterized by a painterly style, rich colors, movement and unexpected textures, “Preening” was inspired by the beauty of my surroundings, and reminders of our fragile balance with nature. I have been experimenting with blending representational and abstract characteristics as well as combining different heights, textures and varying reflective qualities of the glass and stone in my mosaic work. The patterns in the feathers and placement of different cuts of glass in “Preening” reflect this focus. By precisely cutting the glass pieces to fit perfectly and eliminating grout between the tesserae, I enhance the flow of colors and a sense of depth in the work. When seen in person, this mosaic will change colors as the light fluctuates throughout the day. Often evoking strong emotions, my mosaics have been described as having an ethereal and painterly quality.
Straddling the line between reality and abstraction, this mosaic both captures the essence of a sunset over rippled water and is an abstract work celebrating light, movement, texture, color and value. Using different types of glass, each with varying heights, texture, reflective qualities and color saturation, “Rippled Sunset” highlights a playful pattern of contrasting color.
I created this light-focused mosaic as a metaphor for personal reflections, searching for and finding beauty in my everyday experiences and tapping into the power of positive thinking. I believe that by harnessing the power of positive thoughts, I can not only help myself but also influence those around me.
