Renewal

This piece is a pregnant belly cast from one of my daughters who was carrying my fourth grandchild. She was almost two weeks late and we needed a distraction. We made a plaster cast which I then covered with mesh and thinset to create my substrate. I wanted the mosaic to go beneath the skin and represent the awe-inspiring changes that a woman's body goes through to create a new human, and then to feed the baby with the milk in her breasts. This mosaic consists of smalti, ceramic tile, and beads.
